Ghosting

Ghosting refers to the unintended faint reproduction of images or text from a previous print onto subsequent prints in lithographic printing. This issue can occur when residual ink from a previous impression transfers to the blanket cylinder and subsequently transfers to the next printed sheet, resulting in a ghost image. To fix ghosting in lithographic printing, you can take the following steps:

  1. Ensure Proper Ink Drying: Insufficient ink drying can contribute to ghosting. Adjust the drying parameters, such as temperature, air circulation, or drying time, to ensure adequate drying of the ink between impressions. Increasing the drying time or adjusting the drying equipment can help minimize residual ink transfer.
  2. Clean the Blanket Cylinder: Residual ink on the blanket cylinder can lead to ghosting. Regularly clean the blanket cylinder to remove any residual ink or debris. Use appropriate cleaning agents or solvents recommended by the equipment manufacturer to ensure effective cleaning without damaging the blanket surface.
  3. Optimize Ink-Water Balance: Improper ink-water balance can contribute to ghosting. Ensure that the ink and water settings are properly calibrated to achieve optimal ink transfer and prevent excessive ink buildup on the blanket cylinder. Adjust the ink and water fountain settings as necessary to maintain a balanced ink-water ratio.
  4. Control Ink Film Thickness: Excessive ink film thickness can increase the likelihood of ghosting. Evaluate the ink application system, such as the ink fountain settings, ink roller pressure, or roller speed, to achieve controlled and consistent ink transfer. Avoid over-inking, as it can lead to excess ink buildup and subsequent ghosting.
  5. Use Anti-Setoff Spray Powder: Anti-setoff spray powder can help minimize ghosting by creating a barrier between the printed sheets. It reduces the contact and adhesion between the freshly printed surface and the blanket cylinder. Apply an appropriate amount of anti-setoff spray powder using a powder spray unit to facilitate separation and prevent ink transfer.
  6. Check Ink Compatibility: Incompatibility between different inks used in the printing process can contribute to ghosting. Ensure that the inks being used are compatible with each other and do not have a high tendency to transfer or interact with one another. Consult with ink manufacturers or technical experts to ensure compatibility and avoid ghosting issues.
  7. Adjust Printing Pressure: Excessive printing pressure can increase the likelihood of ghosting. Evaluate the pressure settings of the printing press, such as the blanket cylinder pressure or impression cylinder pressure. Adjust the pressure settings to ensure optimal ink transfer without excessive pressure that can cause unwanted ink transfer from previous prints.
  8. Monitor and Fine-Tune Process: Regularly monitor the printing process and examine the printed output for any signs of ghosting. Make necessary adjustments to ink formulation, ink transfer settings, drying conditions, or other press parameters based on feedback and observations. Fine-tuning the printing process can help minimize ghosting and improve overall print quality.
